Blackjack: Rules, Card Values and Gameplay

Blackjack is one of the most famous card games in the world. The basic rules fit on a postcard — which makes the game approachable, even if you've never sat at a table. This page explains how blackjack works, what actions are available to you, and which variants you'll find at gaming operators. Important note up front: Wunderino in Germany offers virtual slot machine games exclusively — blackjack is part of this informational knowledge page, not part of our German game offering. More on that at the end.

The goal of blackjack

You play against the dealer (the "house"), not against other players. Your goal is to get a card total as close to 21 as possible without going over — and at the same time to have a higher total than the dealer.

Three outcomes are possible:

  • You win – your total is closer to 21 than the dealer's, or the dealer goes over 21 ("Bust").
  • You lose – the dealer is closer to 21, or you bust.
  • Push (tie) – you and the dealer have the same total. Your stake is returned.

Card values

Card Value
2 through 10 Face value (so 2, 3, …, 10)
Jack, Queen, King 10 each
Ace 1 or 11 (whichever is more favourable)

A blackjack is the best hand: an ace plus a 10-value card (10, J, Q or K) on the initial deal. Blackjack beats any other 21 hand and typically pays 3:2 (so 1.5x your stake).

Gameplay in five steps

  1. Place your bet. You bet before the cards are dealt.
  2. Deal the cards. You get two cards face-up; the dealer gets one face-up and one face-down.
  3. Your decisions. You choose how the hand continues — see the next section.
  4. The dealer plays. Once you're done, the dealer reveals the face-down card. The dealer plays by fixed rules — typically "Hit until 17, then Stand." Some variants vary ("Hit on soft 17"). The dealer has no own decision.
  5. Payout. Whoever is closer to 21 wins.

Your actions at the table

  • Hit – Take another card. You can keep hitting as long as you're not over 21.
  • Stand – Stay with your current total. No more cards.
  • Double Down – Double your stake and take exactly one more card. Then automatic Stand. Common with totals of 9, 10 or 11.
  • Split – With two cards of equal value (for example two eights), you can split them into two separate hands. You place a second stake of the same size.
  • Surrender – In some variants you can give up after your first two cards and get half your stake back. Not in all variants.
  • Insurance – When the dealer shows an Ace, you can place a side bet that the dealer has a blackjack. Mathematically unfavourable in most cases.

Common blackjack variants

  • Classic Blackjack – Standard rules, one to eight decks.
  • European Blackjack – The dealer gets the second card only after players have played. Subtle but relevant rule shift.
  • Atlantic City Blackjack – Eight decks, Late Surrender allowed, dealer stands on soft 17.
  • Vegas Strip Blackjack – Four decks, doubling after split allowed.
  • Single Deck Blackjack – Only one deck in play. Theoretically lower house edge, in practice often balanced out with adjusted payouts.

Every variant has a slightly different house edge. The variant's rules are shown in the info panel before play.

Blackjack basic strategy explained briefly

Blackjack is one of the few games where statistically optimal decisions can meaningfully reduce the house edge — to roughly 0.5% to 1%, depending on the variant. The so-called Basic Strategy is a table that gives the mathematically best decision (Hit, Stand, Double or Split) for every combination of your hand and the dealer's open card.

Important: Basic Strategy does not guarantee wins. It minimizes your statistical disadvantage. The game's outcome remains chance-dependent.

What Wunderino offers

Wunderino is licensed in Germany to offer virtual slot machine games (GGL permission, licence number 208.1.1-12254). Blackjack and other card games are not offered under this licence — they fall under different licence categories that we don't hold.

If you landed on this page wanting to play blackjack: we can't offer you blackjack at Wunderino. What we do offer are more than a thousand slots in various styles and volatilities. If what draws you to blackjack is the decision-making, classic slots or hold-and-spin mechanics might not be the ideal substitute — but slots have their own appeal, which we explain in our Slots Guide and the Slot Machine Types overview.

Common questions about blackjack

What's the best blackjack value on the deal?
A blackjack: an ace plus a 10-value card on the initial deal. Typical payout 3:2.

When should I split?
Rules of thumb: always split aces and eights; never split fours, fives, or tens. With other pairs, it depends on the dealer's card.

When should I double down?
Classically: on a total of 11, almost always; on 10 when the dealer shows 9 or lower; on 9 when the dealer shows 3 to 6. Details are in the Basic Strategy chart.

Is card counting possible in online blackjack?
Not in classic RNG-based online blackjack — the deck is reshuffled after every hand. In live-dealer blackjack, theoretically limited possibility, but practically barely effective given frequent shuffles.

Does Wunderino offer blackjack?
No. Our German licence only permits virtual slot machine games. Blackjack isn't included.

Play responsibly

Whether blackjack, slots or another form of gambling: set yourself a budget beforehand and stick to it. Slots can be addictive — they should be entertainment, not an attempt to earn money.
